Special Instructions

If you own one of the following cameras please read these special instructions before using PTLens.

Full Frame Nikon DSLR

With full frame Nikon DSLR cameras you can specify FX or DX format in camera settings. FX will render a full frame image while DX will produce a cropped image (1.5x). In PTLens you must also choose the corresponding format in the Model menu. For example, the Model menu for the D3 indicates:

You may notice more lenses are listed in the Lens drop-down list for the DX format. If a lens has been calibrated based on an FX image, that calibration can be utilized for both FX and DX processing. For DX images PTLens applies a bit of math to yield the appropriate correction. If a lens has been calibrated based on a DX image, that calibration only applies to DX images. Since the FX format is larger than the DX format, the distortion for FX images is not known.

Leica D-Lux 4

Camera firmware corrects for distortion in JPEG images but slight improvements can be realized if processed in PTLens. Photoshop and Lightroom also correct for distortion in Raw images using the same algorithm as in-camera correction. The following options are available in the PTLens Model menu:

For JPEG images, or Raw images processed in Photoshop or Lightroom, choose one of the first three options to correct distortion. For Raw images processed in a Raw converter that does not correct distortion, choose one of the Raw options. For Raw images processed in Capture One do not process in PTLens as Capture One does an excellent job at removing distortion.

Panasonic LX-3

Camera firmware corrects for distortion in JPEG images but slight improvements can be realized if processed in PTLens. SilkyPix, Photoshop, and Lightroom also correct for distortion in Raw images utilizing the same algorithm as in-camera correction. The following options are available in the PTLens Model menu:

For JPEG images, or Raw images processed in SilkyPix, Photoshop, or Lightroom, choose one of the first three options to correct distortion. For Raw images processed in a Raw converter that does not correct distortion, choose one of the Raw options.

Olympus µ4/3

Distortion is automatically corrected for several lenses by camera firmware. Click on the Lens drop-down list in PTLens to see if there are JPEG and RAW versions for the same lens. For example you will find the following entries for the Olympus 14-42mm lens:

The JPEG option assumes that the original image was a JPEG image and camera firmware has corrected distortion. In this case PTLens will slightly improve on the manufacturer's correction. Also choose the JPEG option for Raw images developed in Olympus Master, Photoshop, or Lightroom as they apply the same correction as camera firmware. Choose the RAW option when processing images in Raw converters that do not correct distortion. Corrections are accurate for the 4:3 format (not 16:9, 3:2, or 6:6).

Canon S90

Camera firmware corrects for distortion in JPEG images but slight improvements can be realized if processed in PTLens. Canon's DPP also corrects for distortion in Raw images utilizing the same algorithm as in-camera correction. You'll need to experiment to determine whether your Raw converter also corrects distortion.

For JPEG images, or Raw images processed in a Raw converter that corrects distortion, choose the S90 selection in the Model drop-down list. For Raw images processed in a Raw converter that does not correct distortion, choose the S90 Raw selection.
