Let's color correct the same image with Curves. First choose the Options button in the Curve dialog box and select Enhance Channel Contrast. Then examine the red, green, and blue channels in the Curves dialog box. The green and blue channels are being expanded to fill the entire color range. Next we'll return to the red channel and decrease the contribution of red to correct the color balance (Cast Fix). Finally we'll adjust highlights in the red channel for those rosy cheeks (Highlight Fix).
Recall what we did in Levels. First we emulated Auto Levels by moving the black/white points toward the center for each channel individually. Then we decreased the contribution of red by moving the gamma slider in the red channel. We duplicated these steps in Levels using the Auto command and Cast Fix.
But with Curves there is added flexibility. For example, to increase red's contribution in the child's cheeks, drag the cursor over this area in the image and note where these values are represented on the curve. Place an additional point on the curve and increase brightness for this value.
The final version eliminates the color cast in the grass and accentuates those rosy red cheeks. The picture, modified with Curves, is now as I remember it — taken near sunset at a park in Germany, showing the healthy glow of a young child at play.
